Cloud folders
Keeping documents in Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, on the desktop and on Android, and what each service can and cannot do.
Calmly Writer has no cloud of its own and no account to sign in to. It works on files, and files can live in a folder that a sync service keeps in step across your devices.
Windows, Mac and Linux
Save your documents inside the folder of Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, the one their desktop app keeps synced, and that is all. The service uploads the file when you save, and brings down the changes made elsewhere; if a document is open while a new copy arrives, the app tells you, as described in Changes on disk.
Android
The Android app opens and saves documents through the system’s file picker, which lists the storage providers installed on the device: the internal storage, Downloads, an SD card, and the cloud services whose apps you have installed.
- Google Drive appears when the Drive app is installed. Documents open and save in place, and changes made on other devices are picked up while the document is open.
- Dropbox works the same way, with one habit of its own: it may refuse a write while it is syncing the file, in which case the app keeps your changes in the backup and tries again.
- Other services work if their app offers its files to the system picker.
Chromebook
On a Chromebook, Google Drive is offered to Android apps read-only. A document opened from Drive can be read but not saved back in place: the app says so, and offers Save As… to put a copy somewhere writable, or Open read-only to just read it. See Android and Chromebook.
More in Files
The files Calmly Writer opens and saves, what each one keeps, and which to choose as the default.
Saving by hand or letting the app do it, where new documents go, and how they are named.
The open dialog, the list of recent files, and the other ways a document can arrive in a tab.
The copies the app keeps of every open document, how to go back to an earlier one, and how to get back a document you closed without saving.
What the app does when a file open in a tab is changed by another program, a sync service or another computer.
Word and PDF from the document on the screen, and what to use for HTML and Markdown instead.
