Formats
The files Calmly Writer opens and saves, what each one keeps, and which to choose as the default.
Calmly Writer saves plain files you can open anywhere, in four formats, and chooses one of them for new documents.
| Format | Keeps | Notes |
|---|---|---|
.calmly |
Everything: formatting, embedded images, comments, writing direction, the word target | The default. A plain text file inside, readable with any editor. |
.md (Markdown) |
Formatting, images, links, checklists, tables | Opens in any Markdown app. Comments, direction and target are not kept. |
.txt |
The words | Line breaks and paragraphs only. |
.html |
Formatting, images, direction | Opens in a browser. Comments are not kept. |
The app also opens Word documents (.docx): they are imported, and saved under a new name in one of the four formats above. And it opens the .cml files of old versions of Calmly Writer, which it saves as .calmly and leaves untouched.
Choosing a default
sets the format new documents are saved in. If you work with other Markdown tools, choose .md and nothing of what you type is lost; if you use comments or right-to-left text, .calmly is the one that keeps them. A document already saved keeps its own format whatever the default; Save as changes it.
Markdown files
Markdown written elsewhere opens as it should, with lists made with - as well as *, tables, task lists and code blocks with a language. A YAML, TOML or JSON front matter at the top of the file is kept out of the way and written back unchanged when you save, so a file from a static site generator survives a round trip. For the details of the dialect, see Calmly Writer as a Markdown editor.
Formats you export to
Word (.docx) and PDF are export formats: the app writes them, but does not edit them. See Export and print.
