Links

Links to web pages, to other documents on your disk and to headings in the same document, and how to follow them.

Select the words and press Ctrl+K⌘K, or use the link button on the toolbar. A small dialog asks for the address.

The link dialog: a field for the URL, an OR divider, a Choose file button, and Cancel and Apply.
  • A web address needs no https://: it is added if you leave it out.
  • Choose file… links to another document on your disk. Later, following the link opens that document in a new tab.
  • An address that starts with # jumps to a heading of the same document.
  • Apply an empty address to remove the link.

There is a quicker way for web addresses: copy the address, select the words, and paste. The selection becomes a link to what you pasted.

Hover over a link and a small pill shows where it goes; click the pill to open it. From the keyboard, Ctrl+Enter⌘Enter opens the link under the cursor. On a touch screen, tap the link to see the pill, then tap the pill.

A paragraph with a link, and above the link a pill showing its address with an arrow to open it.

Web links open in your browser. Links to files open the document in Calmly Writer. Links to headings scroll the document.

In the files

Links are kept in every format: as [text](address) in Markdown, as <a> in HTML, and as links in exported Word documents and PDFs.

Bulleted, numbered and checklist items, nesting them with Tab, and turning one kind of list into another.

Images

Four ways to put a picture in a document, the difference between embedding and linking one, and what the editor does not do with images.

Tables, code and quotes

The slash menu that inserts blocks, the toolbar that edits tables, and the rules that keep them compatible with Markdown.

Notes attached to a passage, in three colours, which travel with the document and never print.

Smart punctuation

Curly quotes, dashes, ellipses and arrows written for you as you type, the quotation marks of your language, and how to turn each one off.

Spelling and languages

The spell checker and its languages on each system, adding words to the dictionary, and the language of the app itself.

Writing direction

Right-to-left writing for Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and other scripts, per document or for every new document.

Find and replace

Searching the document or every open tab, and a replace that keeps the capitals of what it finds.

Copy and paste

What happens to formatting when text comes in from elsewhere or goes out, and the two ways to copy a document as code.
