Privacy, offline and no AI

Where your documents are, what the app sends over the network (very little), and why there is no AI in it.

Your documents stay with you

Calmly Writer works on files on your device, and its backups and previous versions are stored on your device too. There is no account, no sign-in and no cloud of ours: if you want a document somewhere else, you put it in a cloud folder of your own choosing, and that service, not us, moves it.

The app works fully offline. Nothing you write is sent anywhere.

What does use the network

On Windows, Mac and Linux, the app asks our server once at startup whether there is a new version, and downloads it if there is; see Install and update. That is the only connection it makes. The license key is checked on your computer, without contacting anyone. On Android, updates are Google Play’s.

The app has no analytics, no usage tracking and no crash reports. The privacy policy says the same thing at greater length.

No AI

Calmly Writer has no AI assistant and nothing that writes, completes or rewrites text for you: it is a tool to help you write, not to write for you. What you write is never sent to any AI service or used to train AI models. We explain why in our manifesto.
