Install and update
Where to get Calmly Writer for each system, what the installer registers, and how updates arrive without you doing anything.
Windows, Mac and Linux
The desktop app is one download per system from the download page: an installer for Windows, a disk image for Mac (Apple silicon or Intel) and .deb or .rpm packages for Linux, in 64-bit and ARM versions. One license covers all three systems.
The installer also tells the system which files Calmly Writer opens, so a double-click on a .txt, .md, .html or .calmly file (and their variants, .markdown, .htm, .text and so on) opens it in the app. You can also drop a file onto the window, or start the app with a file as its argument from a terminal.
Updates on the desktop
When you open the app it checks for a new version. If there is one, it downloads in the background and installs when you close the app, provided the download has finished. You do not need to do anything: the next time you open Calmly Writer you are on the latest version.
Windows and Mac show the system’s notification when a download is ready. Linux shows a notice inside the app and adds Restart to apply update to the main menu.
You can also force an update at any time by downloading the latest version from the download page and installing it over the one you have. Your documents and settings stay where they are.
Android and Chromebook
The Android app is on Google Play and updates through it, like any other app. Chromebooks install Android apps too, and that is the way we recommend: see Android and Chromebook.

Several documents at once, in tabs or in separate windows, and the small things tabs do that are easy to miss.
